• BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

    Homeroller's Recipe Sharing app idea

Some things to think about as you move toward initial beta release: 1. The same leaf from different sources ( retailers) may have different taste. Consider adding a field to describe whom the leaf was purchased from. 2. The same leaf from the same retailer may have different flavor profiles...

    Container/towel

I keep my leaf in the bags it was shipped in, stacked into a Rubbermaid tote. (actually 2 totes, since the first is full) When I prepare to roll, I count out the leave I need, spritz them with DW and place them in plastic bags to rest until the next day. Filler gets one spritz on one side, and...

    Experiments anyone?

Interesting. Can this be done for a large batch of tobacco ( say a quarter pound) or only one leaf at a time?

    Rolling figurados

All my roll ups thus far have been parejos. I use the book method. I believe I'm getting pretty good, and am considering getting a mold to roll a more complicated shape. I was interested in hearing what changes in techniques I should be prepared for. Do I need to vary my distribution of filler...

    sand on the leaf

Yes, it happens mostly on Seco, which is harvested from the bottom of the plant. If it's excessive, step into the shower and rinse the leaf quickly both sides. Then hang them up tips down to dry. I have felt a little grit on my leaf but not enough to bother rinsing off.

    Tasting Notes and learning...

Perhaps you can propose a "standard" method of preparing the leaf to sample? I have " heard" that in the growing country the blenders will roll a cheroot. Your pictures suggest you're rolling a real stick, binder no wrapper. A couple questions: Are you using a standard binder or hunting through...

    creating a smooth blend

The "formula" for creating a balanced cigar stated that the total "value" of the filler leaf should be 6, where each Seco leaf had a value of 1, each visio leaf had a value of 2, and each ligero leaf had a value of 3. So, by creating a blend with 1 leaf of each you are indeed following the...

    creating a smooth blend

You do realize that 1 seco= 1 and 1 visio leaf=2 and 1 ligero leaf=-3, so you are actually starting with 1+2+3=6.

    Cap or no Cap

I do a pigtail on my cigars. Seems lately I have been using wrappers too small to yield a suitable flag and cap.

    Question about wrapper thickness?

Agree with above. Also, the leaves are most fragile when dry. When properly conditioned to roll they are more flexible and (somewhat) less prone to tearing.

Leaf discussion: can taste characteristics be sorted by cou ntry of origin?

I understand. It's kind of like cooking. If you've never tasted garlic by itself, you have no concept of what it will do when you double the amount you put into Grandma's lasagna recipe. The difference in cigar blending is that, aside from the "3+2+1=6" and the "ligero plus visio plus seco"...

Leaf discussion: can taste characteristics be sorted by cou ntry of origin?

Have some sense of what a combination will taste like BEFORE I start conditioning leaves. Have a sense of what to adjust when a blend I create doesn't taste like I want. I guess that means that, to some extend, I want to Become a blender.

    Sources of retail leaf

I know of 2 sources of leaf available in quantities appropriate to hobby rollers. Links are below Leaf Only https://www.leafonly.com/index.php Whole Leaf Tobacco https://wholeleaftobacco.com/main.sc If anyone knows of additional sources please share. I have heard forum mentions of leaf not...

Leaf discussion: can taste characteristics be sorted by cou ntry of origin?

Assuming each country/region has a specific taste profile, I suppose I could begin to understand these differences by rolling a series of puro batches. For instance, all leaf from Ecuador, then Nicaragua, then DR, etc. I understand your point about things that are done after the leaf is...

Leaf discussion: can taste characteristics be sorted by cou ntry of origin?

I am still struggling with my approach to blending. I have read the blend threads with interest. I have blended a few very serviceable cigars. I have blended a few cigars I would not want to smoke again. I have rolled a total of about 200 cigars batched into 16 different blends. For me the whole...

    re-condition your tuck cutter

To clarify: I assume when you sharpen the star and base blades, you surface the flat side on a flat stone? If not, what do you use to maintain the angle on a curved surface?
