• BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

They are like new born children. Some will have a face that only "a mother could love" but you'll love them just the same. However, unlike children, when they misbehave or smelly or just plain bad seeds... you can smash them in the ashtray and go roll a new one.

It seems the real deep secrets of good cigar tobacco lie within the way it been fermented. "Aging tobacco is a catabolic process where enzymes break down polysaccharides (cellulose) into monosaccharides (glucose). It's how harshness and "off" or grassy flavours are mitigated. This process can...

What's the best wrapper you got recently?

My most recent love affair is the Mexican San Andres wrapper from LO. Larger size leaf, very smooth, dark color, small veins. The entire bag of leaf was perfect. It's the nicest leaf I've ever used. Some say it's spicy but I use minimal wrapper so it's not affecting me. I'm lov'in this stuff.

    Rolling your own?

I The last order I got from LO was ordered on a Tuesday and received it the following Wednesday. I'm in no big rush and was caused no inconvenience by waiting a week. Time is not of the essence. The positive side was the order came in correctly (6 different samples) all in the proper case and...

Extra 1/4 pound samples: Dominican Seco Piloto Cubano Great choice Aged Colombian Seco I have no idea what to do with those two, but I'll learn something from it. The Piloto Cubano is a favorite seco filler (pretty strong flavor) and the Colombian seco has a big barnyard odor is good also. 2...

    lookin for lurkers

My two cents... I would advise against the kit and go with some select tobacco. I personally didn't care for the broadleaf binder or the Pa Oscuro wrapper. Medium to full body.. The Mexican San Andres wrapper is beautiful with smaller veins and tastes much better. Dominican binder Dominican...

What's it cost to roll your own?

I don't keep track that closely of money spent but it's far less expense than buying boutique cigars. I've come to prefer the draw and construction of my own cigars. The prolific use of the Lieberman machine throughout the industry has led to such variation in the quality of the draw. The end...

    lookin for lurkers

Just got an order in yesterday from LO. It did take a week to receive it but I'm not in a big hurry anyway. The good news is the assortment of samples was in excellent condition and cased perfectly. Very nice looking leaf and the San Andres wrapper is absolutely beautiful (I may have a new...

Is using a mold for conformity a good thing?

Great question! I was using a blend using a leaf count as a measurement. Something like 'two leaves of seco and a half leaf of ligero'. Each cigar gets the same count. The problem is... the leaves can vary in thickness. So,even though they contain the same count they ALL end up different...

Here an interesting review of the Cuban Montecristo. They dissect the cigar and determine the amount of binder, volado, seco and ligero. They talk about the importance of the seco in the blend and the difficult job of the blender to maintain the proper balance.

This is a good point. Sharing information is how we can get better cigars and keep the home roller an enthusiastic hobbyist. I'm still a hopeful believer that 'petuning' is the answer to creating better cigars. Imagine if each person in this forum performed different experiments how much...

WLT Kit Bliss Cigar Kickstarter Concept

Quarter lb. increments are a great way to get going. Keep it simple. LO has Dominican seco and ligero in 1/4 lb samples. (Piloto Cubano is a good choice) The next step up in power would be the Nicaraguan seco and ligero. 1/4 lb of Dominican binder. Any of the Ecuadorian shade wrappers are...

My best guess is the supplier for both companies (WLT and LO) is Lancaster Leaf Tobacco co. They take orders as small as 1 bale of tobacco. From the web site... PREMIUM CIGAR TOBACCO Lancaster Leaf supplies various Wrapper, Binder, and Long Filler from around the world for premium cigar...

We know very little about the history of the tobaccos we get. However, having smoked some non-fermented leaf I'd say the tobaccos from LO and WLT are definitely fermented. IMO.

I take the wrapper and spritz it lightly with distilled water and place it in a large plastic zip lock freezer bag. (Zip lock makes for easy in and out) The next day it's ready to go. The tile works well to stick down the leaf and stretch it out. (I use a piece of granite I got at Floor/decor)...

Good video. I like the close up perspective of having the camera strapped to your chest. You can see the detail quite well. This goes to show there's more than one way to peel an orange. Everyone applies their own style of doing things differently.
