  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

My baccy is all in jars or the tins they came in if its small enough and I can smoke through it pretty quick. They all reside in an old steamer trunk I have because its spacious and kind of my storage space for random things.

thanks for the reminder, clint. i forgot about that thread. i usually hate the "show off" threads except the daily smoke, but the pipe stash was new to me and i was giddy. i have added a couple few since then. o)

as for my "cellar", it is an actual CELLAR, a below-ground-level garage. everything that is NOT in a sealed tin is in a jar, just tightly screwed on and labeled (and i am thinking i may wind up jarring out square tins, as i have heard enough anecdotal evidence of failed seals to worry me). my only concern now is, with a slight bit of moisture in the basement, if the jars might develop rust over time (decade plus), but i am still thinking this through. our little hobbit-hole of a house is too small for another stash (and i am NOT moving my cigars downstairs!), so the pipe stash kinda has to stay down there...

i am thinking now that i may inventory, mark, and seal my long stash into the coolers, like silicone caulk or something to actually SEAL the cooler for years, leaving a manifest tagged to the exterior for when i get back to it. anyone wanna conjecture on this?

and, as for keeping it part of my home (you like to look at your stuff, right?), i have one of each tin i have popped, empty and displayed, in my nerd cave with my books and humis, along with a couple keepsake cigar boxes, just to dress the place up.

Well as a home canner the inside of the jar should not rust especially if just full of baccy. So any rust would likely be the bands. To circumvent that issue there are wex jars which are glass tops with rubber seals. There are also BPA free plastic tops available for standard canning jars. So they would take care of rust really. Id say if you don't want to spend in that than a sealed cooler with low rh beads would also help on the.rust front when using standard jar lids.p

Java- some thoughts here- For long-term cellaring I would recommend mason jars with the tops dipped in wax. You can find these how-to videos on Youtube. Unfortunately, I have found that mason jars don't seal well unless the glass portions are heating in the microwave to make them hot prior to sealing. I have had to go back and redo almost all of my jars because I inspected them and found not all were sealed properly.
If you seal the tobacco in mason jars and wax the tops then place them in a cooler you won't need any additional measures.
I refuse to take out the tobacco from the square tins. As we all know, life's a bitch sometimes and I would like the option to sell those aged tins on Ebay or to someone is needed. You can't do that with mason jars. I have vacuum packed all my tins and Esoterica bags that are long-term and even short term stored.
