BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE
Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Well JoPa resigned today, which the univiersity had to let him go to preserve it's reputation. How much this damages his legacy is all going to come down to what exactly the assistant told him was going on in the locker room? The only positive thing is that hopefully this will prevent anything like this happening again at other universities.
I don't know what news you were watching but I don't think Joe Paterno resigned. The last report on local news mentioned rumors of the university's board of trustee's planning an exit strategy for Paterno. However, Paterno's son claims no such plans are being made. Paterno made a couple statements out in front of his home on his own private property while surrounded by students of PSU. I heard my wife watching the video but I don't know where it is located so I could link to the video.

Actually you are correct, guess I should of read more than the Headline and first paragraph.

That program is never going to be the same. Shame for Joe Pa, but it had to be done.
I'm suprised that JoPa just didn't retire claiming health issues or for the good of the program, school had to do it cutting ties with anyone who had anything to do with the scandal

On one hand, I'm a big fan of due process, and I think this might be a knee jerk reaction.
On the other, if he really did know this was going on, and did nothing to stop it, I've lost all respect for the man, and he deserves worse than he'll get.

I guess I do not fully understand. He reported the issue immediately to his superiors. He is being torched because he did not call the police. I don't know how it would have gone down but can imagine...Police: "Did you witness this act Mr. Paterno? No. Sorry. Do you have any evidence? No. Sorry. Not much we can do with second hand hersay."
I still can't believe people are making this argument, it's mind-boggling. First, JoePa has no superiors at Penn State. Second, why didn't he urge his graduate assistant, who DID WITNESS THE ANAL RAPING, to call the police? He did the bare minimum and didn't give a crap whether anything came of it. Not only that, he was aware of other indiscretions of Sandusky and yet for nine years said nothing as Sandusky continued to use football facilities.
I would like anyone who defends JoePa to answer these questions for me:
1. If the 10 year old boy was JoePa's grandson, would he have simply turned it over to "superiors" and never followed up? Would he have continued to turn a blind eye every time he saw Sandusky with a child or using PSU's facilities?
2. If the 10 year old boy was your son or grandson, would you be ok with Joe doing the minimum?
For christ's sake, Paterno himself admitted he didn't do enough and people are still defending him? He deserves to get torched!!!
If I was a PSU alum, I would be embarrassed that students are close to rioting because of the decision their Board of Trustees HAD TO MAKE.
If they're going to protest and riot, go to Sandusky's house for starters.

OK...if Joe's firing has to do with the fact that he "did not do enough", then how come McQuery (the asst coach who actually did witness the abuse) still has a job??? Is he not just as responsible (or even more responsible) than Joe? Where are the scores of people demanding his head on a platter? How about the AD Tim Curley whom Joe reported the incident to (and whom is actually CHARGED in the case)...he has not been fired either.

I think the fact that JoePa IS Penn State is the reason he's getting dragged down with it all. Whether he did enough, didn't do enough, did the right thing, whatever, doesn't really matter. The media and all the crucifiers are going after the face of the university, the easiest person to blame, and no doubt there are parts of the story that are being left out and parts of the story that are being exagerated.
It really just makes me sick. My dad is a prominent high school basketball coach and he's been through this kind of debacle too, where the whole truth and the story behind the story isn't being told. And people end up getting wrongfully crucified.
My dad's story: 2 players got in a fist fight during practice. He made them run 100 laps holding hands the next day. Someone videoed it using there cell phone, put it on youtube and then next thing you know, my dad's a racist homophobic coach that needs to be fired. It was headline news in our town and in the larger city of COlumbus, Ohio for about 2 weeks. TV crews crawling around their house, the school, taking random interviews in grocery parking lots. All because he was trying to teach kids that fighting ain't cool and they have to be a team. It was all bullshit!
And this whole JoePa firing smells of the same stinch I witnessed with my dad.

bballbaby, your dad sounds like a great man. His solution is pure old school coach, we need a lot more of that these days. Sorry he and your family had to deal with the stress.

I understand that JoePa is a legend but rioting against it is ignorant. Little children were violated and the students seem to be forgetting that.
