  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

    Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

We need a C-Bid code word

No shit. The codeword needs to be entered into the comments section and will appear next to your bid.

If you guys want that stuff next to your name then go right ahead.
I was just following with a joke.

I don;t really expect anyone to put a 'muntle' in a comments section of a public bidding site

that'd be just weird!:stretchgr :rofl:

It should be a changing code so people don't catch on and start using it themselves. You don't want somebody seeing it, and start using it, even though they aren't from BOTL.

You could do something simple and easy like this (it may seem hard at first, but it's really easy)

Start the code with a letter from the day of the week, this will kind of act as a checksum for the rest of it. Use the third letter of the day of the week.

Sunday = N
Monday = N
Tuesday = E
Wednesday = D
Thursday = U
Friday = I
Saturday = T

Then follow it by the sum of the numbers used in the date, for example

03/31/2007 = 3+3+1+2+7=16 so the code for today would be T16.
04/01/2007 = 4+1+2+7=14 so tomorrow would be N14.

This way you could verify the BOTL member by applying this formula to the date he placed the bid.

It's just an idea, I know some of you probably want to keep it simple, but eventually they will catch on and will start adding the code word to all of their auctions to keep you off their backs. Although this isn't rocket science, it does add one more step and keeps the word alternating. Unless they visit BOTL and see this, it will keep them guessing on whats going on, and hopefully let us win some auctions without outbidding each other.

I like this idea...maybe to simplify it we could base it on the day the auction closes?

just a thought!

A lot of people put advertising phrases or stupid comments when they bid on CBid. I doubt that our board is purchasing so much from them that they would notice that we are using a simple word or even putting BOTL. I would suggest that we just put the BOTL. Its simple and pretty common terminology for cigar smokers.

That is a pretty cool idea - kind of like the old cuban box codes. I have some ideas on making it not so easy to crack though I don't want to say them here if the idea goes through.

I had some other ideas but didn't want to over complicate my initial proposal.

Cool idea!!

Now, how to make the code more private?
A private brothers forum? One that would only available to people with ### amount of posts.

you'd better get to work than :stretchgr :rofl:
I know :smokingco

I own some forums websites and have built and help maintain several more. One of the hardest things about running them is keeping members active (look at how many members are registered here, and actually stop in and contribute every once in awhile...it really is a small group). I would recommend the forum be kept private and hidden. Let it be a total surprise to somebody once they hit ### of posts. That way you won't get a bunch of people coming on and padding post counts to gain access to the forum. Let the true contributors reap the rewards of making this the site it truly is.

You could possibly set up a couple forums like that. (25 posts, then another for 100 posts, and so on). It's just an idea...man, I am full of ideas today. I need a smoke!
