The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Tastes change and by God they are making better cigars these days in places outside of cuba

So true. I smoked a Liga Privada T-52 yesterday and it was absolutely phenomenal--better than any Islander I've smoked at this point (which is no saying much, lol).

Well at least my intention on this thread worked. Some guys, including myself, were able to pass forward some sticks that we wouldn't smoke. Just because I don't care for them doesn't mean they are bad smokes. They just aren't my thing. Glad that a few brothers could get hooked up.

I've tried 4 to 5 different sticks from both RP & Gurkha and really haven't enjoyed any of them. I just feel that if I haven't been wowed by any of them so far, why waste my time or money? There are too many other brands out there that I enjoy!

I've finally read this thread after a week or so of looking at it.
Rocky, Rocky, Rocky...........
Owr yes
Winterblend still love it
90 and 92 not anymore
Viaje, Pepin, Padilla (old), Lfds, Padrons, Tatuaje, Illusione, Fuentes and plenty of CCs. I always think back to a day when a outof state b&m was having a online raffle (the you know what cigars when no one was lucky enough to get them). He was "live" on the web and someone walked in and said, "hey man those some of dem there Rocko Patars". I'm not saying that if you smoke Rps or Gurhkas that your not a educated individual but maybe you just havn't had the chance to be exposed to many other brands yet. I definitely liked Rocky more before I was able to try so many other brands that are always "on" and consistent, blending etc.
That is why I no longer smoke Rps anymore or at least very very little.

What the heck. I'll jump into the fire just for fun... :)

I enjoyed the RP 1992 for a while, but either my taste has evolved or they're having consistency issues - they just don't do it for me the last couple I had. I think the Nording (either size) are a great everyday smoke (to date - time will tell). The 1961 torpedo is great - med/full with a ton of flavor. 5-6 other RPs I tried (OWR, Edge, 1990, etc) don't do much for me...

I avoided Gurkha for a long time until I smoked an aged Beast blind. It was exceptional! I must admit I went overboard buying cheap Gurks online and have now acquired enough to keep me busy. Big problem is that all I've tried were either fantastic or so terrible I immediately moved others like them into quarantine and ran to brush my teeth. :).

For me, I have a similar problem with both brands. They are spread way too thin and you don't know what to expect. I can put one from each line in my Top 20 list, but many others on my s*** list. To enjoy their stuff, I have to approach each new blend (or sadly each new box for RP) as a smoke I've never tried. I love some and hate some, but always start with the lowest expectations.

I've tried to be balanced in my feedback, but I think what seems like elitism when put in certain ways is just the same two cents from other BOTL who have had the same experience I've had with these two brands.

The bottom line is that life is too short to smoke crappy cigars and whether you are willing to drop $4 or $40 for a stick, there are a number of quality-focused brands that you *KNOW* will deliver every time.

I smoke enough cigars every week to risk some bad ones in search of a new experience or even a new favorite, but if I was only smoking a few sticks a week, there are dozens of brands I wouldn't touch.

As brothers in this fascinating passion for cigars, I think it's great to have a place to share our opinions. I hope we can all appreciate the opportunity and try not to be offended when a brother calls our favorite smoke a flaming turd. With rare exception, it's just an honest assessment. Is it really all that different than reading a glowing review and dropping $10 on a stick you think is terrible? Our tastes are simply different.

Thank God there are 1000 different sticks so we can all enjoy and share in our common quest for the ultimate smoke.

Just my two cents - no refunds. :)
Well said, thanks for your honesty.

I wish I did like them because the marketing of the both of them is spot on.

I met Rocky Patel and he was cool guy. He even gave me a decade cigar. I didn't have the heart to tell him that I haven't found a cigar of his I truly enjoyed. However, IMO RP cigars are MUCH better than Gurhkas. I haven't smoked a Gurhka I can finish when I am sober.

I think the reason BOTL members tend to gravitate to a few manufacturers is the fact that there are really only a few that consistently put out quality cigars to keep cigar lovers satisfied. It is really hard to waste the few opportunities you have to smoke on something dissatisfying.

For non-cubans, I prefer cigars from Fuente, Pepin, and Reyes Sr. If that makes me close minded, so be it! :)

I like a handful of each but I know a ton of people that enjoy them. I think that as people experience different blends their palates become more refined and what was once a great smoke is now just a good smoke. It's kind of like beer. When I was younger all I drank was Bud which later became Heineken and Molson. Today I enjoy Stella if I want a lager and Guinness as my usual but after a hot day doing yard work an ice cold Bud still hits the spot.

I've been smoking cigars quite a few years and I'm not afraid to say that I still enjoy an occasional Edge.

i have an ITC 10th in the humidor right now. the only other RP i've tried is the 1961, and it wasn't bad.

Gurkhas? i've quite enjoyed half of the Micro Batch sticks (TPB-1 and C-10). the other two were meh. just had a Black Dragon earlier tonight... it was on the bland side to me. full bodied, sure... but blandish. those TPB-1s and C-10s are on the short list for box purchases, though. we'll see how i feel after i smoke the other ones i have.

i've been noticing a lot of Gurkha and RP hate around here, and from what i can tell its mostly because of the way they market themselves and the fact that they have a gazillion different types of sticks to choose from. just don't let me hear any one of you say that you're Beatles fans. :waving:
