• BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Very cool "ring gauge". I've never seen anything like that.

Dude, plume doesn't grow through the cello!

That's a beautiful cigar. It would be a shame to not smoke it but there is a way to make $250 from it. Just send it in to the the mold study that is being undertaken and if it isn't mold or bacteria then you get $250. They haven't found one yet but maybe you've got one. Here's a link to the...

Very nice! It looks like you grow your own leaf. I did that once and it was a lot of fun but the leaf flavors were not great so now I buy my leaf.

    Rolling meet up

I'm not a talented roller but I can make a decent looking stick. I was thinking about reaching out to my local cigar community to see if anyone wanted to get together to try rolling. I would be the teacher and supply the leaf. While I'm no expert, I do know a ton more than when I first...

    Pics of Your Sticks

I decided to use up my scraps so I could try using paper as mold. I worked quite well. I'll order some more leaf and start using the paper-wrap method.

    Humidity Issues

Here's my suggestion. The boxes are likely the same RH as the cigars that are in them. Maybe there are a bit too dry and will affect your humidor environment but only for a short time (days or weeks??). I would just put them in and throw a couple of Bovedas into each box. Leave the box lids...

    Humidity Issues

I was reorganizing my winador a while back. I grabbed a wooden cigar box from a closet and filled it with cigars that had been loose and put it in the winador. That box sucked up an incredible amount of moisture from the air in my winador. I put 3 Bovedas in the new box so the cigars would...

    Why use distilled water

I used to do rehydrate Bovedas like that but someone told me that water doesn't bother them. I tried it and it's true. So now I just dunk them in a bowl of "distilled" water for a few hours. I've done it several times with no problems.

    Why use distilled water

Interesting discussion. Here is my synopsis of the comments so far. 1. Minerals are not an issue when using tap water vapor to condition Bovedas or humidors since the minerals will not evaporate. 2. Minerals in tap water may have an adverse effect on humidification media due to the residual...

    Why use distilled water

So we all know that we should use distilled water. When we need to condition a humidor we put in a tray of "distilled" water. I also only use distilled water, but every time I use it I wonder why. I understand that there are minerals in non-distilled water but I would think that they would...

    building a new humidor, questions

I do a lot of woodworking. Here's my 2 cent opinion. Unless the smell of Spanish Ceder is important to you, don't bother. All woods will absorb moisture and give it back, which helps regulate the environment inside. Okoume is a good choice because it doesn't smell. Mixing wood types won't...

If I owned these I would never be able to bring myself to smoke one!

    Your most beautiful cigar

It's still cold here in Ontario. The snow is falling today. It's very pretty but not conducive to enjoying a cigar. I was looking longingly at my humidor and was admiring the contents. I really like the look of a New World cigar that I have. The band, the perfect box press, the red ribbon...

My technique for paper molding hand rolls

I'm going to try the paper wrapping. How long do you guys leave it wrapped?

    Rehydrating Bovedas

I just drop my dry Boveda pack into a dish of distilled water, leave it for a few hours and it is good to go. The exterior is not affected by the water. It's fast and easy. Don't have to make it complicated.

    Calibrated?

When I open the door to my winador the hygrometers react almost instantly. The air in my house during the winter is around 30% RH so the readings drop quickly. BUT, when I calibrate them in a bag with a Boveda it takes about 12 hours before they stabilize. They respond quickly but it takes a...

    Slow smoker? Fast smoker?

Robusto is my favorite size, primarily because it doesn't take as long to smoke. I thought I was slow but I only get about 45 minutes, an hour if I'm lucky. I don't know how you keep a Robusto lit for 90 minutes !

    Telling a friend about fakes

I don't have proof but I think all the fakes that are for sale in Cuba are made in Cuba and are therefore made of Cuban tobacco. I've been to Cuba many times and I know that fakes are a HUGE business there. They can be bought everywhere. I don't believe they could be imported. There is too...

cigar quality in Cuba is not great

The hurricane hit the southern end of the island and did major damage there. We were staying in Varadaro which is near Havana. There was damage there but not sever. The tobacco growing region in at the top of the island and was not affected. The crop is supposed to be excellent this year.

    re-wraps

I've had success re-wrapping. I rolled some last year that were too tight (the filler was too wet when rolled). I sliced the wrapper and binder with an exacto knife and I re-rolled them. It was messy because the filler was now a bit too dry and it didn't want to stay together, but it did...
