• BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

    Homebrewers - Whats Fermenting?

I'll definitely post back with some tasting notes. I'm hoping this will amp up the dough notes and bring a little more bready maltiness to balance the dryness. Its odd but I couldn't find any references of people brewing BW with vienna even though its in tons of weisse beers. What I did find...

Brewing up an Arnold Palmer style Berliner today and scratching another off the 'to brew' list. Im killing about 4 birds with one stone on this one, gotta love it :D 1) Im trying a heavier wheat to barley(70/30) ratio today to see which proportions I like best 2) Using strictly vienna in place...

    BOTL Weight Loss Thread

Ive always just used the free version. Premium probably has some nice features but the free version is more than enough to get things done. If you need any advice on getting the app dialed in I'm more than happy to help.

    Any winemakers in the crowd?

I don't make wine but I occasionally make cider. Check out homebrewtalk.com if you haven't already. It's a forum for homebrewing. Beer, wine, cider, mead, sake, cheese making, etc. You'd be hard pressed to find a better source of info between the members and library of recipes. It's like a gold...

Ever Bring Your Own Hygrometer into a B&M ?

While I certainly understand the point here from the customers end I think its bound to rustle some jimmies. IMO either deal with wet sticks or shop elsewhere. Its their business if they want the RH that high let em be.

Sounds legit and it comes with a counterflow chiller too which is cool. Interesting that they reference top and bottom mesh screens, Ive noticed with Braumeisters it seems to work better if I put both mesh screens on the bottom of the malt pipe.

Everything but Hunahpu clones lol. If it performs like a Braumeister and has a 20lb capacity thats a hell of a deal IMO.

    Homebrewers - Whats Fermenting?

Ive been brewing on Braumeister systems, which are also electric single kettle systems, for almost 3 years now. The main drawback is grain capacity limits which Ive learned to approach in two ways. First, recipes need to be designed with the total capacity in mind. This doesn't only apply to...

I haven't used a wide range of lacto sources so you'll have to take it with a grain of salt....but none of the sours I've done have gotten a pellicle or krausen. Maybe because it's been pure pitches of lacto, I dunno.

I got the malts in the other day and couldn't help but eating some. The "toast" and "bread crust" descriptions for Brown Malt are amazingly accurate. This stuff is like a piece of toast that's started to burn. Not beyond being edible burnt but as about as toasted as you can get your toast. Amber...

    Homebrewers - Whats Fermenting?

You know how it goes digging the web for this stuff. Lots of dead ends, unreliable info, and conflicting opinions. These have been the main consistencies though... 1. Don't use the American stuff. Thomas Fawcett's is spoken highly of which isn't surprising but its hard to find. 2. Its a...

lol you don't know how long I went back and forth in my head messing with the brown/crystal. It was driving me nuts. Is that too much brown(% wise) or do you think the crystal is just better here? Agreed on the FG too. Beersmith is giving me 1.014 if I mash at 156 so I'm definitely make that move.

So I had planned on doing something interesting with cypress wood after getting some inside info on its potential and settled on something along the lines of lemon cake. Well Funky Buddha recently released their Lemon Morangue Pie which is not only amazing but pretty much what I had in mind. In...

    Homebrewers - Whats Fermenting?

I certainly wouldn't count it out but I'd be inclined to check everything on the cold side first. The odds are probably higher that a line didn't get sanitized or a spot on a tank was missed than spontaneous inoculation. Im just assuming here but I feel like if that was the cause then you'd...

Maybe pull off a couple growlers to stick to the side. One to age a little longer and develop and the other to propagate from if it turns out you like whatever got in there. Any clue on the source of the infection?

From the wort smell I have a feeling its going to not only be good but also different. Has that sort of dank herbal character I get from German hops but with some soft peach-orange notes. Almost like a northwest style pale gone german. I loved the Wit I made with this hop, its the perfect hop...

Whats the most brown malt you've used in one go? I was supposed to cover it in my malt experiments but never got to it. Ive heard of people using it as a base for porters though I can't say I've had one or ever brewed my own that way. I had a couple really nice English porters last night so its...

    Homebrewers - Whats Fermenting?

I thought about this, specially raisins soaked in fireball, but I wouldn't be allowed to do it that way at the brewery as alcohol tinctures are a no go. I think there's some potential doing it that way for sure though Trying to keep hops out of it as much as possible. I don't want wash out the...
