• BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

    Homebrewers - Whats Fermenting?

This is where things can get tricky and why you'll definitely want to see your full water report. Hardness mostly has to do with how strong of a buffer the ions in the water will be against the influence the malts will have on the ph. The malts bring the ph down while the hardness works against...

    Homebrewers - Whats Fermenting?

Not something I'd recommend messing with. As long as your water is fine then I'd use it as is and get into this stuff further down the road. After overdoing the gypsum on one batch it sticks out like a sore thumb now. So many commercial IPAs have it its disgusting. It's not a pleasant bitterness...

I didn't realize you could just get on board with Oliva like that. I mean it makes total sense but I figured it wouldn't be that easy. I doubt they give Joe Schmoe the absolute best of the best, that's probably saved for the big money players, but regardless that's a top notch source for leaf.

Dom binder but straight Nic habano seco fill. I think I'm getting a better grasp of where certain flavors are coming from though I'm learning the hard way that some tobaccos just don't mix well. I've been going over some blends I didn't like trying to pinpoint where the bad stuff was coming...

Glad to see someone else on the cheroot kick! Currently smoking one I rolled with Nic habano seco. My speed has picked up quite a bit lately it's too easy to just roll one when I want a smoke lol.

    Homebrewers - Whats Fermenting?

I'm pretty sure the standard is 100g DME to 1L of water IIRC. However something I like to do is sparge an extra 1/2 gal off the mash and boil it down to 1L. I pitch my starters at high krausen so I'd rather use runnings from the beer I'm making vs plain DME since I'm adding the whole starter...

    Homebrewers - Whats Fermenting?

I'm not one to rush beer but having said that when it's done it's done as well. Old Rasputin goes grain to bottle in like 2 weeks, how I don't know it's amazing. Generally I wait 3 weeks and by then it's usually been flocced out for a good bit. This doesn't necessarily mean I'd consider the beer...

    Homebrewers - Whats Fermenting?

Yea it's a dry yeast. Very clean and neutral, attenuates about the same as US05 and doesn't kick off as much sulfur which is nice lol. Your temp range is right in its wheelhouse too.

    Homebrewers - Whats Fermenting?

I used to use US05 for everything but it can behave really random sometimes plus it flocs out like shit. IMO I'd switch to Nottingham particularly with that ferm temp. Notty ferments super clean and flocs out so much better. It's also a great yeast for cider too. WLP 400 is a great yeast for...

Ferm temp and time in fermenter? Primary only or you use a secondary?

    Homebrewers - Whats Fermenting?

Congrats!! Give your next batch an extra week in the fermenter to clean up. If you can preferably around 70f for a "diacetyl rest". Also make sure your not under pitching that's the cause of most people's off flavors. A lot of stuff ages out but you also want to make note of these things so you...

    Adventures in home rolling

I leave the sticks in the mold for a few days to dry then once wrapped I store them in a cigar box. Write down the blend info and "box date" on an index card and tape it to the box. I went ahead and froze all my leaf so I don't have to worry about freezing sticks post-roll anymore. I also don't...

Do it just grab a leaf or two and roll it up! FWIW I remember a post where Saka said cigars need around 60 days post roll. They're good for a few days but afterwards they go through a bit of a sick phase and need some down time. Don't be afraid to light them up ROTT though fresh rolls are great.

    Adventures in home rolling

I haven't tried the sumatra binder but I've heard good things about it. Im a damn creature of habit Ive mostly just messed with different ratios/primings of corojo, criollo, and Nic habano with the same binder. Its not very adventurous but the range of flavors you can get from those 3 is huge...

    Adventures in home rolling

If you want spice you gotta go with Corojo. More body, strength, and spice than the other varieties IMO. Criollo and Corojo are a match made in heaven though, top it off with a SA wrapper and you'll get even more pepper.

    Aged Las Calaveras 2015?

I smoked a Mule fairly recently and thought they aged out really well. Different of course but still nice. To OP I'd at least smoke one every 4-6 months to see how they're coming along. It's also pretty cool to see how the profile changes over time.
