I pulled the trigger on a pair of Etymotic ER-6 :music:
Nice, I use them at work and on the train. They cut out about 20dB of noise. They also actually have decent bass response which the cheaper earbuds don't.

If anyone really loves bass these are the closed cans I have http://www.thetwistergroup.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=K81DJ D33381&source=fr

They fit snug around your ear so they block a decent amount of noise, but they really thump. They are designed for DJs use in clubs but work great with the ipod without an amp.:music:

That Grado sounded like the right product...right up to the "not the most comfortable" statement.

I think that's what concerns me the MOST; certainly more than sound quality. Like I said, I appreciate high quality, but I'm no audiophile.

http://www.headphone.com/guide/by-manufacturer/sennheiser/sennheiser-hd-280-pro.php these might be up your alley. I would say the sennheiser 595's but they are a bit pricey and probably would require a headphone amp (I have the 555s and they do also, but they are nicely padded)

You guys opened a can of worms here. 2005 was my big headphone year. I'm not as into it as I once was but I still got some knowledge.

The guys over at http://www.head-fi.org/ know a ridiculous amount about headphones. I see some recommendations for Bose headphones in this thread, personally, from auditioning and comparison, I would never use any Bose product unless it was given to me.

The third cheapest and the pair of cans that I ultimately decided to keep were my Alessandro MS-1s. They're basically the Grado SR-125s but modified for Alessandro.

I love them. I never really got into IEMs because my inner ear is rather sensitive and I don't like things going in. A friend of mine recently asked me to put together a decent gaming and music listening PC rig for him. Some of the best places to find deals on headphones, particularly Sennheisers are NewEgg.com and ZipZoomFly.com. I recommended for his purposes and price point, Sennheiser HD555s.

Like any hobby there is a lot to it. One thing most people don't think about with headphones is a proper amp. It makes a HUGE difference in the sound.

That is a really good beginner amp. If you're not too picky about building it yourself or having it be brand new, then http://www.head-fi.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=55 that is a good place to get an amp for a good price.

I signed up on that forum too, I had to stop myself from buying more expensive headphones cause its worse than cigars for your budget! I bought the headphone amp and senheiser 555 combo from headroom and I am very happy with it. $300 you get excellent open headphones, and a USB DAC (digital to analog converter) which works without any setup on both mac and PC, as well as with any device with a mini headphone jack like the ipod. Plus it has this feature that emulates speakers by adding delayed sound to the opposite ear of the original source.

Yeah I still have an older HeadRoom Total Airhead lying around here somewhere. I didn't much like it. I loved my old Pete Millett hybrid amp.

I have really seriously been considering buying these:

BOSE Over-the-ear TriPort Headphones

I've tried them on in a store, and they are really, really comfortable. Ultra light, no pressure, my big ears fit in them completely and almost don't even touch the headphones. Just really comfortable, and probably useable all day.

They seem to sound good, but I'm not an audiophile by means, so take that opinion with a grain of salt.
those are the same ones i got for christmas. i love them, really comfy and not to big on the ears to look like a thug.just a tad to bassy but nothing to interfere with slow low beat music.

Sennheiser, Koss, Shure, Ultrasone, and Etymotics are all highly rated makers of headphones in price brackets covering the whole spectrum. Koss is a lower end price bracket (usually), and Ultrasone is very high ($600 headphones are the norm).

I'm using some Panasonic RP-HTX7 can headphones. The sound is pretty good for cheapies, but the colors and styling of the headphones is the best I've seen in a long time.

From what I have heard the Shure and Etymotic in ear headphones are about the same quality, the audiophiles just differ on what kind of sounds it sounds best on but either way you will get some great sounding tunes for something that goes in your ear.

I was never really interested in a pair until my stock apple one's (yes I know they are 6 dollar pieces of shit) bit the dust. It also didn't help that I was able to listen to a pair of Shure e4's
