  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Rasshat Blind "A"
First and foremost, thank you Ryan (Rasshat) for this opportunity.
Construction veiny and toothy, but not overly so.
Prelight draw is tight with hints of hay, mild, and very little spice to it.
Lit with standard triple flame, nice even light.
First draw is very underwhelming. Little to no spice and very little flavor to it.
First third. This thing started with a nice, even burn, but quickly went wonky. Texas Connie and I both agree, this one is just a bad burn.

It keeps trying to correct itself, but fails. The flavor just isn't there, regretfully, I don't think this one will last.
Pulling into the second third, I am struggling to keep it lit, the smoke production is minimal at best, I have to draw multiple times in order to get a mouthful of smoke. Could this be my first experience with an overly wet cigar? I'm beginning to feel like shit for not liking this cigar. Rasshat takes the time, thought and effort to send out what he thinks will be an enjoyable cigar and I'm not liking it. Pitched it halfway through, I'm just not liking this one, it takes too much work to keep it going and the work to reward ratio is way to high. If the flavor was there, I'd power through it.
Final third, just couldn't do it.

Out of respect to Rasshat, my fellow blind reviewers, and the manufacturer, I am not giving this a final thought or score, I feel bad when I don't like something someone put hard work and effort into.

Maybe the next one will be better...
Sorry brother. Yup, wet cigar. I've found wet cigars to taste soured and off as well and the burn is horrible. The next one will be better for you Matty!

Review: Rasshat Blind Review B 102614
Size: Looks like a 5.5x44 or 46

Appearance/construction: Semi-toothy wrapper, medium brown in color. Looks like a double cap? Not seeing a third roll. Dry boxed for the night, still a tight roll with little give and rebound. Not too veiny and a seamless roll for the most part.

Aroma Pre-Light: Nutmeg and spice, a touch of chocolate.

Cold draw: Straight cut with scissors. Wood, but not cedar, with some spice. Reminds me of when my dad smokes meat a few times a year, and I think he uses cherry wood but I’ll have to ask. The draw is perfect and easy.

Light: Lit easily and evenly with cedar. Tons of smoke.

First impression: Got a huge hit of spice and bread on the first draw. Faded quickly to a creamy spice, with some bitter citrus on my lips. Definitely going to be a full and flavorful smoke.

Aroma Post-Light: The aroma is cedar and natural tobacco, with some heavy spice that stings the nostrils.

First Third: Alright, moving along past the first quarter inch into the first third, the spice remains heavy but the smoke on the exhale reminds me of fresh bread. The burn is sharp and even and leaves a tight white ash. The consistency in the ash is incredible. I can see the veins actually burnt into the ash.. Not getting any chocolate or nutmeg that I sensed in the pre-light aroma, yet. The smoke is sticky and coats my mouth on every draw. The ash fell off after an inch, but stayed together on the drop. I’m picking up a light cinnamon and very woody/grassy flavor on the retrohale.

Second Third: I’m standing in a brewery. This stick is throwing out smoke bursting with flavors of grain and hops and chocolate. It’s like smoking a pepper chocolate stout. It’s delicious. The smoke is dense and plentiful, with a retrohale that is assaulting all of my senses. Once I dropped into the meat of this stick it’s like all the flavor complexity just crashed through a locked door. I’m getting a lot of cinnamon spice and earth on the tongue and lips. Creamy and roasted grain taking the forefront with all the hops, florals, and tiny bit of chocolate that I mentioned in the background. The burn is still mostly even, just a little slanted, with some self-correcting.

Final Third: The smoke is so spicy and full in this last third, and oh so good. Glad I ate for this review hahah. No heat at all. The toasty grain and creaminess has faded, dropping an octave into the dark earth and espresso, with said spiciness on the tongue and roof of my mouth. The retrohale holding some bitter dark chocolate, but is very dry now. I probably will stop retrohaling soon… well… right now haha. Burn has evened up and is as straight as it was when I lit the stick. Awesome self-correcting, and the taste is incredible. I’ve got some cracking on the wrapper that I really hope doesn’t mess up my smoke… moving into nub status as I type. Where’s my poker…. I can’t stop smoking this baby.

Overall Impression/Final Notes: I think it is pretty clear this was a great stick. Great flavor complexity. Loved the level of spice. Great burn. I loved the smoke production.

My guess: LFD Air Bender

Alright Ryan, "A" has been sleeping in a dry box for the night. Lighting up now, will post when finished.
Quoting this as to not clog up the thread with hundred mile long comments lol. Great review Chris, I think it's interesting how closely we rated this cigar.. I'm curious as to what you'll change your guess to. I still haven't decided on any of them lol.
Dude, I'm going back and reading your reviews for A and B now.... it's crazy how similar they are. We are definitely on the same page and pulling a ton of the same flavors out of these sticks. Nice to know I'm not crazy haha.... Unless, we are both crazy. Yeah, that's probably more likely. haha

Yeah, I suppose you're right... and if you interrupt my review one more time, it'll be three. ;) haha. Writing up C now, brother.

Review: Rasshat Blind Review C
Size: 5x52

Appearance/construction: Smooth, light brown wrapper. Solid construction and full of tobacco. Seamless wrap and triple cap. Construction, overall, looks top notch.

Aroma Pre-Light: Not a lot of scent coming off the foot and wrapper. Really light smell… If I had to pick out something it would just be cedar.

Cold draw: Straight cut with scissors, and all I can pull is clean tobacco taste. Not really much else going on. I get a very tiny bit of spice on my lips.

Light: Lit quick and even with cedar.

First impression: Flavor and smoke in full force. I definitely did not expect the amount of flavor right off the bat. I got a little spice and peanut butter of my first draw. Yes… fucking peanut butter. I know… crazy right?

Aroma Post-Light: Very nutty and woody aroma in the smoke, along with a little spice that stings the nostrils.
First Third: It’s weird. I draw, exhale, retro, then write…. As I’m writing what I taste, I repeat the process and get something totally different. This stick is throwing me for a loop right out of the gate. I just got the taste of salt water taffy on the retrohale and aftertaste, as well as some very light white pepper and nuts. I’m thinking almonds or peanuts, but the smoke is so creamy it is more like almond butter or peanut butter. Either way, with the taffy sweetness it’s delicious. Tons of flavor and tons of smoke. The burn is very even and seems to be progressing fast. As I write this I am already nearing the end of the first third, and I’ve only been smoking for 20 minutes. Tight white ash holding as I move into the second third.

Second Third: I’m picking up some grapefruit notes, hell maybe even pineapple too. Really weird sensation with the light spices that are still present. Still very creamy and plentiful smoke. The spices settle into the back of the throat, with the sweet notes on the tip of my tongue and roof of my mouth. The best part seems to be that the ‘sweets’ are ‘sticky’ and remain in my mouth long after the smoke is gone. Grain, butter, spice, fruits, nuts, florals, natural tobacco, and cedar. It’s like eating a toasted kings Hawaiian roll with peanut butter on it. Hahahah, yeah that’s as weird and as close as I can compare it. High complexity smoke, with different flavors floating on and off the palate on the same draw. This definitely a medium smoke, but a huge flavor profile. A little more spice coming in and the burn is breaking and then self-correcting towards the end of the second third.

Final Third: Sweets are gone. Spice is still light pepper flavor but it’s taking the majority of the profile, along with cedar.. Much of the aroma is gone from the smoke as well. Still a really nice even smoke, well balanced. The saltiness is also making another appearance, paired with a deep leathery flavor instead of the sweet taffy. *A core of earthy natural tobacco flavor is behind the whole profile. Going into the nub status with a smile and still no heat.

Overall Impression/Final Notes: Another great stick from Ryan. I loved the progression of flavors throughout the stick, especially the sweet fruits and insane complexity in the meat of the cigar. Overall, great stick and I will definitely be getting more as soon as the reveal, mostly due to this would be a great everyday smoke.

My guess: I have no idea. Usual robusto size and shape, and flavor complexity and construction that are superb but hard to nail down to a single brand. If I’m shooting in the dark, the came from Ashton or Carillo. But again, complete shot in the dark.

Smoke time: 1h20min

Construction Properties: 27/30
Taste Properties: 33/35

Great review Chris! That stick had me super intrigued. I heard good things but Jesus you guys are selling it like crazy :)

B and C are much tougher guesses than A was. I'll be shocked if you guys get it but you never know. I was expecting A to be guessed, at least by brand.

This is a lot more fun than I anticipated too. Glad you guys are diving right in!

Rasshat Blind Review "B"

Regretfully, I forgot to drybox this one, so, I tried to fix that by firing up the grill and toasting it for a short time... I dried it out way too much...
Smoke time less than 1 minute.
Lit it, the damn thing caught fire, blew it out, but once I took that first draw, this thing went off like you would expect, super dry kindling. What I was able to discern was a nice meaty flavor, so my guess is a KFC...

Fret not faithful reader, that review was the "Lets have fun" review and the actual review will be coming up shortly. After I kick the wife and her kids out the door (it's early, these kids are heathens, my kids are angels, just like me and don't show up until bed time when they are asleep).

Lol, thanks for the laugh Matt, that just made my morning. Getting ready to fire up "B" for my review in a little bit.
