  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Couple restores I did tonight.

So, today's mail brought my Senior Reamer (near new condition on Ebay, $6), a package each of the rough, extra soft, and regular pipe cleaners, and an estate Dr Grabow pipe to practice on. My stem brushes from Amazon should be arriving later this afternoon via UPS.

I've bought a bunch of pipe stuff and when the last of it arrives tomorrow (according to the delivery schedules) I'll post my pics of everything.

Holy jeebus, speaking of "slippery slopes"!

I found myself looking into an ozone generator after reading a couple of blogs from sites (like Walker Briar Works) where they let the pipes sit in an ozone chamber for 48 hours to remove all ghosting!

Ya think so? It's not all inclusive or whatever. Just my opinions and what I've found I've needed and used over the last whatever and how ever many pipes I've done.

I went thru the pipe thread for a ways and don't see anything like it. So I will do it. Also need to add what some of these things are used for (at least what I use them for). Give me some time. I laid alot out on my blog so I can do some copying and pasting etc. Maybe I will work on it tonight. I started a Save 320 restoration last night and want to do a Wally Frank and and Edwards tonight. Need to remember to take pics and post them.

This one I originally thought was a homemade pipe. But after inspecting it I found that the shank had been cracked under the homemade copper band. So my best guess is this pipe had been repaired then rusticated and another stem fitted to the pipe. The repair is solid and the band is tight. The stem sits a little crooked in the mortise. There was excess adhesive that was used to repair the crack in the mortise but it cleaned up nicely with qtips and alcohol. Although the stem would pass pipe cleaners I could feel them getting hung up. Plus I kept getting fuzz from pipe cleaners out of the stem. So lots of patience and I have no idea how many pipe cleaners I finally worked out what was hanging up the pipe cleaners. A large shaving of vulcanite from when the stem was drilled. U can see how big it was in the picture.

In the above picture u can see the stem is canted some. But its a good fit in the repaired shank and the pipe has a nice draw.

Where is the best place to get Halcyon II and Paragon wax? Having a hard time finding a place that sells both. Great work on the pipes. I am almost done collecting materials. Just need to find a decent fixer upper for my first attempt.

Finepipes.com carries it. $10 for the Halcyon wax and $14 for the Paragon

And thanks for mentioning those two waxes. I was wondering why I couldn't just use the carnuba wax but Halcyon has a higher melting point which is probably a good idea

Nice sandblast apple with a cumberland stem. Cant find info on this on yet. Found a small black dot on stem and briarwood of london stamped on the bottom. The bowl is scorched pretty bad. Im tempted to sand off the top of the bowl but havent made up my mind yet.

This pipe came from the same owner and the bowl was scorched in the same place. Sanded this one on my topping board till I was tired of sanding. The stem took alot of work but its shining nice now.

Well apparently I have something pretty special here. Still reading thru the info I was sent after posting this up elsewhere for some friends to see. This is basically a "Pre - Ashton" Ashton pipe that was probably blasted at the Dunhill factory.
