While I appreciate that blending, branding, and being the "idea guy" takes a certain kind of skill and know-how, I'd really like to see a more vertically integrated newcomer step into the limelight.

It seems every guy with a tattoo and a record collection is putting out a similar cigar brand, and it's tiring. I could really get behind a guy who spends time in the fields and gets his hands dirty while simultaneously building a strong and genuine brand. Someone who can actually grow and roll the leaf but also capture the imagination and develop a fresh and innovative company while staying grounded to tradition.

I'm the biggest Tatuaje fan and if the relationship with Pepin is working, why change it. Guys like Huber and Gellis are doing cool things. But I respect a watchmaker who makes a movement in-house. A pair of high end Japanese jeans commands much more of my admiration, because I know the artisan who made those jeans knows their craft from the inside out, and actually makes every stitch. I couldn't imagine an idea guy making it in the craft beer business without running an actual brewery.

Yes we have Padron, Pepin, Fuente et al. but a new release from their likes is not the most exiting thing in the world. And these families have a long tradition in the cigar business. I respect J. Drew for packing his bags, heading to Nicaragua, getting his hands in the mud and learning how to take a seedling and turn it into a fine smoke. And then actually doing it. It was ballsy, and it was American as hell.

The next guy who does this and puts out solid, genuine smokes (but please hold the flavored sticks and the whole selling to Swisher thing) and can build an engaging and captivating brand will get my money and my following.

Sounds like you just described Nick Melillo. Admittedly I've only seen all this on his own social media platforms but from some of the stuff he's been posting it looks very exciting. That added to the fact that he's got previous and you might have your guy...

I got into cigars just as Liga Privada was getting attention. I could get 6 boxes of FFPs and 3 boxes of Dirty Rats at a time back then no problem. I bought so much of it that they aged out quicker than I could smoke. Lesson learned. Now I'm buying Tatuaje like a mofo because I can get crazy-good stuff that is new to me without all the mania involved with people who live for the hunt of the "it-cigar." I also do a fair bit of "buying for 5yrs from now" with Fuentes. Whatever the hot new thing is, I'm good. I can wait.

Definitely looking forward to what Steve Saka and Nick Melillo will do after their no-compete agreements expire!

Well said. Whatever else can be said about the man, or the brand, this is a great point.

Does Nick have a non-compete? Just wondering as he's already posting about blends he's trying and I was wondering if his boy JD let him go free and clear knowing he was selling the company anyway?

I'm sure somewhere on this board someone mentioned that he does have a non-compete but it runs out this summer.
May have been @ssaka (apologies for the tag if not)

Don't know about a new hot brand but this new cg size of the guerrilla warfare is a must try imo
I totally agree with you, this stick is pure FLAVOR BOMB. I typically buy one everytime I goto the lounge. I feel Cadwell, Warped, Viva, and Roma are great contendors for the next brand craze.

Well, it depends on what market you're looking at. I've heard a lot of college aged guys talking about the Cohiba Commodore because of the Jay-Z connection. In the B&M I visited last week the "new" thing is La Gloria Habana Serie R because the rep comes through often and talks with the customers. Room 101 had a huge jump in popularity around here last year. Even the JR Cigars up the highway was selling five different blends. According to the counter guy they were selling as fast as the staff could get them out. Now they are sitting for a month and La Sirena is selling. It really comes down to who can master the PR push while maintaining a half decent product.

Crowned Heads are really getting out there. I'm pulling for Paul Stulac though. I've heard nothing but good things about the guy and his stuff seems to be getting high marks. Plus he started out as a cigar kiosk clerk. He isn't a photographer, fashion designer, real estate agent, or anything of that nature. I just haven't had the privilege of lighting one yet.

Nothing but the utmost respect for what Jon and Crowned Heads are doing.. they took my palate a leap forward in 2014. Not only were they hot in terms of social awareness, but excellent in quality and consistency. Look out for an even more successful calendar year from Mr Huber and the gang over @ Crowned Heads. (excited for the JD Howard extension btw!)

2015 will be mighty kind to RoMa, Cubanacan, Warped, and Caldwell based off the criteria of my unorthodox hot & excellent scale. I peg RoMa with the most potential for longevity. Its all about staying in your lane. One guy who deserves more recognition as we head into 2015 is Jose Blanco & his company Las Cumbres Tabaco.

I think RoMa is a sleeper just waiting to blow up.
Love what they did with the Just For Him coronas and I think the Mode 5 perfecto is probably my other favorite vitola.

I thought I knew something about cigars, but I don't remember even hearing about Rodrigo before this thread. They look interesting and the price looks right to try some.

For the original question, my vote based on everything I smoked last year is Caldwell.
