  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

How's your day going?

Got a little rain last evening. 4.5" in 45 minutes. I'll be cutting out drywall in the basement tonight. Water at the street was 3 feet deep and had nowhere to go. Perfect, just before my 4 day golf invitational. If I even get a scratch, it's DEFCON1. So I got that going for me. Best part will be 4 days of booze and sticks. Can't remember the last time I took time for ME. Wooohoo.

Well at least the fence came in handy. It kept the neighbors from seeing you cursing about having to fix and dry out that basement ;)

Was it pretty easy to get your license and registration down there?
Georgia was a piece of cake. Doing all this in Cali was a nightmare.
yep painless. my wife has a lease and all she had to do was print out their Power of Attorney (that they provide online), along with a few proofs of residency and we were in and out with a new plate in about 20 minutes.

license isn't any tougher. you walk in, prove you are who you are and that you live there, and you walk out with an actual license in hand (they have the machines in hand to print them right there - in NY you get a paper copy and then have to wait a week or two for your actual license to show up)

I heard back from an interview I had last week. I got an automated rejection letter. Then I got a personal email from the person that interviewed me. They made it very clear that they wanted to hire me, but their manager made the final decision. It was a long and complimentary email. So, I feel a bit better about it.

I had an interview yesterday that went great. Then at the end the guy said, "you're a great candidate, but we usually only hire internally. So, don't expect a call." Then why even waste my time?

So, I just keep applying and taking courses on Coursera. I've added two classes to my resume. Next I'll probably look for a quick "specialization" to add on.

That interviewer is a dick if they know they aren't hiring anyone from the outside. He was probably checking a box (have to interview an external candidate before hiring an internal one).

What coursers have you taken so far ?

I'm looking to move into the gym management arena. So, I grabbed Customer Relationship Management and Voice of the Customer. Customer service and relations has changed since I was in the retail and hospitality industry 20+ years ago. So, I wanted to get up to speed on how things have changed.

I'm thinking of taking courses on selling and management basics, next. I have been a trainer and / or front line supervisor for most of the last 15 years. But, things are a little different outside of the emergency response world. So, I definitely want to brush up on the new styles and theories.

I had an interview for a shift lead position at a gym recently and they asked why I applied for team supervisor instead of desk staff. I gave the standard interview answer. Then I added, "plus nobody called me back when I applied for the front desk sales position." The job market is crazy right now. A lot of employers in my area have been laying of hundreds of people and companies now they have the upper hand right now.

Good on you for realizing where you need to brush up.

Too many just assume their 20 years experience with one company is enough. But they forget to realize that the way one company works can be VERY different than the rest of the world.

I had a phone interview this morning. I was told that I'm going to have problems finding a job because, "you have too much experience and education." I was also told "we would love to hire you, but really we don't think you would stay around long given the current pay scales."

So, I put in five more applications and we'll see what happens.

I got in my best workout since I broke my finger. So, I'm happy enough.

At least they recognize they don't pay well enough.
