• BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

    Weighing options

I don't have data, I didn't refer to statistics in my post, and I never used the word reliable anywhere in the post. I talked about simplicity v. complexity, ease of cleaning, things that can go wrong, and the fact that ejected cartridges disturb some people. Re-read the post. What I didn't...

    Weighing options

It isn't the caliber, it's revolver v. semiautomatic pistol. There is virtually nothing that can go wrong when you pull the trigger of a double action revolver, only an extremely rare failure to fire (as long as you are using good ammo). With a pistol, you can get failure to feed, failure to...

    Weighing options

My wife, and a lot of friends' wives, prefer the simplicity and reliability of a snub-nosed .38, most often one of the S&W's. I'd encourage her to try one. I have a Colt Agent snubby (from the mid-'80's and discontinued) that I prefer, which holds 6 instead of 5 rounds. If she tries one and...

2 trips, 2 Xikars give me trouble

Actually, Firebirds are exceptionally reliable, as long as you remember to activate the ignitor slowly. You have to give it a chance to get the gas flowing before sending a spark. FWIW. Also FWIW, I have never had a problem with any of my Xikar lighters. :dunno:

    Ever made an impulse purchase?

Have you checked out the Kahr CM9? I really like mine, the Kahrtalk forum is filled with other enthusiastic owners, and it is pretty pocketable (not nearly as pocketable as my P3AT or LCP, but pocketable enough unless you're wearing tight jeans). I would stay away from the Kahr CM40, or...

    Calling all MC riders.

I just noticed this thread. I ride a black '01 HD Superglide (FXD) tricked out as a bagger. I also had an amazing '03 Goldwing for about a year, but I sold it after my wife figured out that she didn't like touring nearly as much as shorter rides. Broke my heart to sell it.... :crytears:

    cutter recommendations?

Lots of great choices: Palio, various Xikars, Swiss Army Knife (SAK)... It all depends on personal preference. I think more people prefer Palio to Xikar, but not by an overwhelming margin. They feel different in the hand, so your best bet is to try various cutters belong to friends, cigar...

    Lighter recommendation

Another vote for the Jet Lite. Buy a bunch of 'em and leave 'em scattered around your house, your workplace, your vehicles, your pockets... As to perceived value, they look much more expensive than they are. The only warnings are: 1) that their finishes are not very durable and will show wear...

    First Handgun

I have 4 handguns, and none of them has a safety. If you have even half a brain and a bit of training, the absence of a safety is irrelevant. In fact, I consider a safety a handicap in a gun that is intended to be drawn and fired quickly in an emergency self-defense situation. JMO, YMMV.

Try this one. You don't even need to spend any money on ammo: http://www.java-gaming.com/game/5598/Kill_The_Kardashians/

    Soft Flame Lighters

I'm with you. I occasionally use one of my Zippos with the OEM fuel insert. If you use the current version of Zippo brand lighter fuel and let the flame burn for a second or two before lighting the cigar, there is zero lighter fuel flavor.

    Soft Flame Lighters

One more thing about the Xikar EX series: While they have a soft flame, they are relatively wind-proof. Of course, lighting a cigar in the wind with a soft flame is something of a challenge, even if the flame doesn't get blown out... :smokingbo

    Soft Flame Lighters

Another vote for the freebie knock-offs. Also, I have a whole lot of soft flame (and torch) lighters, and I add my vote to those recommending the Xikar EX and similar lighters. I also have several Prince lighters, made by Blazer, that have a nice retro look and feel. I got them on close-out...

    Kahr CM9 Experience?

I am thinking that my next gun will be a Kahr CM9. Does anyone on the list have any experience with this gun, good, bad or indifferent? TIA.

    holy crap. double tap

Yeah, I have seen ads for these in the gun magazines. No thanks. By the way, I just arranged a trade of my almost new LCP for an almost new Kahr CM9. Unfortunately, I am going to be on the road for the next few weeks, and I won't be able to get the trade done until probably late April. Delayed...

How to sharpen a V cutter blade?

I bought a Wolf v-cutter and returned it. The shape simply didn't make a deep enough notch on the cigars that I normally smoke. If you are thinking of getting one, I suggest that you try it out on one or some of your regulars before buying. The Xikar does not have that problem.

    Whats your fav "creamy" smoke?

To me, most Fuentes are smooth and creamy.

    Rocky Patel Cigars...

Ditto, except to add that the original release of the Edge was great in both the Maduro and Corojo wrappers.

Just tried my first cup of French Press Coffee

I'm just starting to try a French press. How long do you all let the coffee brew before starting to press the filter down?
