Can Anybody recommend a punch set for basic builds. Just post the link so I can purchase it lol
If you're only going to work on ARs, forever... then how about this: https://www.midwayusa.com/product/800990/ar-stoner-ar-15-roll-pin-punch-set-7-piece-steel
No reviews yet, but should do the job. If you are going to work on other things, Midway, Brownells, and some other places have many punch sets. Lyman, Starret, wheeler, etc. Start with the basic sets and expand as you go. Harbor freight and Amazon also have some inexpensive options, but I try to stick with quality tools when I can. Usually cheaper in the long run.

Yes. Brass, and nylon, where appropriate. Hollow ground screw drivers, vice pads, a decent armorer's wrench, and patience will help keep things unmarred. Brownells has a series of videos that cover a lot of tasks, and they show what tools are required.
For sure. They even have a series on AK building. Would love to do that sometime. Really wanted to do that Jim fuller weekend build class he used to travel and do.
Btw, if you've never read "shit shovel AK" it's a must read.... ;)

You want to build a commie potato digger? You need to place an offering at the shrine of Mr Stoner for harboring such impure thoughts:nailbiting:
No, haven't read that, although I will now. Thanks.:)
Have a MAK 90 i picked up on a whim about 25 years ago. Fun as hell to shoot. More accurate than it should be. Can disassemble it while wearing oven mitts, and never given me a minute of problems. Would buy another in a minute, if I didn't already have a list of other toys to buy:ROFLMAO:

Maks are excellent.

Hahaha, it's not nearly as easy as he makes it sound. Dimensions, placement and everything is much more critical than you would think. Far tougher than AR assembly. Can be done though!
Yeah he made some casual comments that understated a task that had me saying WTF? But very doable with a template. Would probably use a finished barrel, but otherwise not too bad.

I would definitely have to start with a good heat treated receiver. The pressing, headspacing, and proper riveting are key.

That was exactly my issue there are so many. I’m very adamant about recommended products people have used. I hate that the “review” button can’t always be trusted. So I asked people I trust that won’t give me a buncha shyt like on the gun forums.
For the record I hold armorer credentials for a few pistols and I’m a career firearms instructor. Im getting into assembling ARs. So I don’t mind spending money on a good set ...I do mind spending good money on trash.

Ah, OK. Look at these two sets: Between them they include what you need for an AR build and they are good quality (or used to be). I can't say these links are the best price, just the first place I found them.
https://www.midwayusa.com/product/465902/lyman-gunsmiths-punch-set-7-piece-brass-and-steel
https://www.midwayusa.com/product/363683/grace-usa-roll-pin-punch-set-7-piece-steel

These are also nice, though not absolutely necessary:
https://www.midwayusa.com/product/163844/grace-usa-7-piece-short-roll-spring-punch-set-steel
https://www.midwayusa.com/product/251890/grace-usa-roll-pin-holder-punch-set-5-piece-steel

And like glassman said above, having brass punches helps quite a bit.

Most of what I have I bought years ago, but the sets above along with some brass stuff, more or less duplicates what I use on guns.
Hope this helps a little. Good luck.

Picked up two lowers this evening and got one put together for a pistol build. If you have a trigger or an upgraded trigger in mind for your build, I can't stress how much the Ergo enhanced LPK should be on your radar, especially for the money. Just know you will need to buy a trigger guard separate which is why this one doesn't have one yet. Can't wait to see what this Elftmann trigger can do.

Not the best, but it will usually get the job done if you're just doing one build - https://www.midwayusa.com/product/392639/wheeler-engineering-roll-pin-punch-set-steel , Grace usa is better, and brass is good for not marring your finish. I've ended up with several different ones and some special ones for certain things.
I agree with @Glassman those are nice and will probably work for what you need. Amazon has a kit that incorporates primarily brass, and some steel and plastic punches that are nice for the reason @Glassman stated with respect to your finish and not putting any unsightly dings anywhere.

There are definitely better versions out there to grab up though.

That build out looks pretty sweet @BrewinHooligan! Great job so far. Post up with how it pans out when you get some lead down range.
