  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Okay, I've noticed that my tuperdor stays at about 74. How can you keep the temps down? My tuperdor stays in my closet and the wineador will be in the garage.
Bury it in the ground. Lmao. You know I don't know if this will work, but I've thought about it. Buy a few of those little blue ice packs that you put in a lunch box. Freeze em up put it in a zip lock and put it in. May take up space but one should cool the whole thing down pretty well. Keep a extra one freezing so that every day you switch it out and have a fresh one. The zip lock prevents moisture leaking which it shouldn't anyways. Idk food for thought.

I keep mine in my basement. I read beetles love 74 and above. Should you not have a basement as an option then cooling it down might be tough unless you use your Ac all the time
There's no basements in Cali. haha

Also I don't have central air so that's out as well. Back to the drawing board I guess.

I just had this thought and I don't know how feasible it would be to actually implement it - but if you don't have a basement and live in hotter climates (or your Summers are unbearably hot), I wonder if you could use a wort chiller that home brewers use to keep their wort at a cooler temperature?

Since the cooler is well insulated, building your own chilling system on the outside may not be an option but if you were to cut an entrance and exit hole in through the cooler to run the copper pipe and then seal it well, it could just work.

For those who are not familiar with wort chillers: http://www.northernbrewer.com/shop/brewing/brewing-equipment/wort-chillers
Cool idea, but pricey. Might warrant the wine ador! :)
Yeah that's a bit pricey, might as well go with a true wineador then. I found one on craigslist for about $300 ready to go. Need to save my chips for that.

That was actually going to be my next question, can you use those freeze packs and would that get too cold? How cold is too cold? This mini wineador was going above my beer fridge in the garage and I have plenty of those so it would be easy to do. I don't have a lot of inventory so space really isn't an issue right now.

Isn't this one of the worst things you can do as far as your seasoning and humidity is concerned? I have read more than once that you should never try and cool a humidor with anything frozen because it will draw out all of your humidity and turn it into condensate on whatever you froze.

True or false?

Don't give up hope on finding a wine fridge for $50 on CL. That is where I found mine. It took me holding out and checking over a few months time before one popped up, but IMO it's the best method for your first.

Thanks, if you spot another one out in your neck of the woods let me know. I have a few friends out there that can pick it up for me.

If the cooler remains sealed, the net effect would be that the Rh inside the cooler doesn't change. However (and I am no thermal & hydro dynamics specialist although I do hope to play on on TV sometime), as the freezer pack thaws, it would draw humidity from the air around it and, consequently, from the cigars, causing condensation on the pack and drier air. But as the condensation evaporates, the humidity would be returned to the air and (eventually) be reintroduced into the cigars.

However, while the overall Rh inside the cooler would remain constant, the individual components (let's call them "cigars") would not. I can't imagine the continual dehumidifying/rehumidifying process would be good for the sticks over a period of time.

But this is just me trying to think my way through it. I could be totally wrong and, if so, would appreciate being corrected!

Stop...lol

To be honest, I think it would take a real science 'spermint to figure out whether the moisture was actually being taken from the cigars. If you really want to know, get an extremely sensitive scale, weigh the cigars before putting the pack in, then while it's full of condensation and again after it evaporates back into the air....lol. Should I get on the phone with Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman from myth busters?

Don't listen me, I am just parroting what i have read elsewhere. Had a similar heat issue over the summer, best solution i found was to move it somewhere cooler... go figure?

No, because no matter what they find, they're going to blow up the humidor at the end.

So a little bit of an update, tried the little science experiment with my mini wineador. It was a warm day today at 82 degrees so the cooler was 81 inside. Added one of the freezer packs to bring the temp down and checked on it 45 mins later. Temp was 63 degrees with 32% humidity with 2 75% boveda packs in it. Guess I'll be looking for a working wineador soon.

Here is mine from a few days ago. When I snapped this, I had yet to put my KL in yet. I did that yesterday and am now waiting for the Rh to come up to my desired reading. As of this morning it was at 57%. Once it hits 63-64% I'll move my sticks over

Two things different from Kloned: I added the battery powered fan and I put my shelves in upside down so there there is a lip to stop anything from sliding out.
