    Should My Next Pipe Be...

One is not supposed to build cake on a Meerschaum. A Meerschaum is not a very practical or rugged pipe. If I were to have only 2 or 3 pipes, I would get briars.

Band ON or OFF??? That is the question

It's like wearing a hat with the price ticket still stuck to it. I remove it.

    Pipes and Cold Weather Smoking

You can smoke a pipe in the cold, but not in a strong wind. Pipes don't like windy conditions, hot OR cold. Even with a wind cap, a wind will make it hard to taste what you are smoking. If the air is more or less still, however, smoking while taking a stroll in the cold, sunny day can be very...

    Shopping habits

All of the above. I stock up on old favourites, and always try something new. Pipe smoking for me is always about trying something I might like, something that looks good, something I didn't know before. That's why one buys new pipes, isn't it? I fear stagnation.

    Pipes with a filter.

Filters are completely useless and make absolutely no difference. If anything, they add to condensation and moisture. Whenever I buy a 9 mm pipe (usually a Savinelli or a German pipe) and it comes with a filter already in, the first thing I do is toss the filter.

    Is the good stuff better?

Obviously, most people aren't complete idiots. They pay more for the good stuff because it's better. It doesn't mean that many, many people cannot enjoy pipe-smoking at a basic level. To me, pipe smoking is a joy, not a contest. Smoke what you enjoy and what you can afford, and be happy...

    Corncobs: Pros and Cons

There really are no drawbacks to a cob. They smoke cool, sweet and dry, and cost next to nothing. They are perfect for a young beginner who doesn't want to spend a great deal of money on trying out pipes. They are supposed to burn out eventually, but since I smoke them in rotation with...

How many pipes in your collection?

Most "estate" pipes come from the estate of someone who's gone to that great smoking lounge in the Sky! I own 150+ pipes of all kinds, from very high end to beloved basket types. I expect to pick up some more on my way to the cemetery, yet! But I've already told my nephew, who laughs...

The best pipe for under $40 is indeed a corncob. They smoke sweet, dry and cool.
